Shannon Soundquist is a survivor, composer and visual artist. she produces sound works as fine art for dance, theatre, public space and for herself. She is deeply rooted in feminist activism related to music, socio-political issues in the art world and underground experimentalism. Shannon works with the complex relationship between sound and bodily experience. She brings together contrasts – across space, time and genres: hard, fast drums meet soft, slow textures. Whether she’s playing pure ambient sets designed to help you drift off to sleep and relax, punchy live mental-tekno sets, or a combination of both – Shannon paints landscapes of kicks and atmospheres.
Shannon composes in real-time. The risk involved in improvisatio lends her music a sense of tension, she surprises even herself. She plays exclusively on hardware. Her equipment allows her body to become part of the circuitry, or rather: her body is part of the sound design. In fact, it is interventional fine art employing musical means, for Shannon’s music is rooted in artistic research. At present, her writing and research focus on exploring the core of trauma healing. It runs parallel to her sound work, has a life of it’s own, prepares the space into which the improvisations flows and intervenes with the music.
