CV & JAB is the collaboration between Christina Vantzou and John Also Bennett. Their third album Κλίμα (Klima) will be released in September 2023. An assertive step forward in the two artists' investigations into melodic interplay, acoustic processing and field recordings, the full-length conjures the modus operandi of archaeologists searching for unheard soundscapes. Structured as an itinerant mise-en-abyme, Κλίμα (Klima) summons worldwide submarine circuits and tropospheres populated by sudden findings and progressive re-encounters - hazy dreams amalgamate with mosaics of reality.
Catalyzed by a 2021 invitation to perform at the UNESCO world heritage site Santuário Bom do Jesus do Monte in Braga, Portugal, the music of Κλίμα (Klima) then fermented across a period of two years, during which live experiments, cyclical studio sessions, and travels across the Island of Tenerife’s effervescent ambiences gradually contributed to its completion. It is on the volcanic island that the narrative core of the album materialized, prompted by a month of recordings across the radically different microclimates populating the landscape. CV & JAB’s flashing transpositions from desert to rainforest are evoked over ten tracks operating as an abstract audio-guide of the outer and inner realms permeating the pieces.
Christina Vantzou is a Brussels based composer who deals with time expansion, atmospheres and harmonies through electronics and acoustic instruments. Her releases include five numbered solo albums of ambient-classical music on American label Kranky, 2020's Multi-Natural LP; a foray into abstract electronics and field recording released by the Belgian label Edições CN, two albums with John Also Bennett as CV & JAB, and many other solo and collaborative works. In her latest work, Vantzou focuses on shaping ceremonial and affective spaces where voice, synthesizers, piano and electronics vaporously extend from the depths, glow in dreamlore and emerge into the light of day.
John Also Bennett is an American composer and multi-instrumentalist who creates music that could be described as atmospheric, avant-garde, or minimalist. His debut solo album Erg Herbe, which used flutes, microtonal synthesis and field recordings, was released on Shelter Press in 2019. His most recent solo work, Out there in the middle of nowhere, adds a custom tuned lap steel guitar and is the result of a year of travel, using simple ingredients to engage with empty spaces, time and resonance on a glacial scale to illuminate a complexity and magic inherent within apparent nothingness. He has collaborated with countless musicians, artists and composers including Jon Gibson, Christina Vantzou, Jefre-Cantu Ledesma, Pauline Anna Strom, Zin Taylor, Peter Burr, and FORMA, among many others.
