YING-HSUEH CHEN & JULIANA OLIVEIRA & CARRIE MCILWAIN presenting HIT

Drumbeat, axe stroke, crash, outcry, pillow thump, hammer blow, drumbeat - and the silence afterwards. HIT examines and demonstrates the power, virtuosity, sloppiness and tenderness of musical instruments and tools. The concert performance interweaves compositions for singing drum kit, axe, wood and voice with verses by the ancient poet Sappho and Iannis Xenakis' PSAPPHA for solo percussion.
In her performances, theater maker Greta Granderath pursues collaborative, feminist working methods and aesthetics and plays with genre boundaries and performance formats. She developed the concert performance HIT together with three artists: Percussionist and composer Ying-Hsueh Chen works in the field of classical and experimental music. Carrie McILwain is a performer and DIY drummer in indie and post-punk bands. And the theater maker and performer Juliana Oliveira has been realizing the ongoing research AXT on wood chopping as a male-read gesture since 2018.
HIT is based on Greta Granderath's research THE ART OF HITTING THINGS (2020) with female drummers from punk, pop, jazz and classical music - based on the fact that the drums are the instrument least often played by women* in these genres. Following the acclaimed world premiere in Hamburg's industrial monument Kraftwerk Bille (2022), HIT can now be seen for the first time in a stage version at the Seanaps Festival.
