Miki Yui is an artist and composer from Tokyo, based in Duesseldorf, Germany. With her background in fine art, Miki Yui explores the grey zones of our perception and  imagination, in the fields of music, drawing, installation and performance. Her works are shown in Europe and in Asia.  

Since 1999 she is known for her unique minimalistic and organic approach. From a  delicate tiny hiss to a distant hum, electronic sounds and field recordings are woven into  music with a narrative tension, that are subtle references to existents.  

Her 7th solo album APERIO! is released from Hallow Ground in September 2020. She has collaborated with Klaus Dinger (NEU!) , Rolf Julius, Carl Stone and Asmus Tietchens. She plays her uniquely mysterious and minimalistic abstract music with sounds from  synthesizer, sampler and noises, that reveals the beauty of emptiness, the phenomena of co-existence and resonances in life.

Miki Yui ist eine Künstlerin und Komponistin aus Tokio mit Wohnsitz in Düsseldorf, Deutschland. Mit ihrem Hintergrund in Bildender Kunst erforscht Miki Yui die Grauzonen unserer Wahrnehmung und Vorstellung in den Bereichen Musik, Zeichnung, Installation und Performance. Ihre Arbeiten werden in Europa und Asien gezeigt. Seit 1999 ist sie für ihren einzigartigen minimalistischen und organischen Ansatz bekannt. Vom zarten Rauschen bis zum fernen Brummen werden elektronische Klänge und Feldaufnahmen zu einer Musik mit erzählerischer Spannung verwoben, die subtile Verweise auf das Existierende sind. Ihr 7. Soloalbum APERIO! wird im September 2020 bei Hallow Ground veröffentlicht. Sie hat mit Klaus Dinger (NEU!), Rolf Julius, Carl Stone und Asmus Tietchens zusammengearbeitet. Sie spielt ihre einzigartig geheimnisvolle und minimalistische abstrakte Musik mit Klängen aus Synthesizer, Sampler und Geräuschen, die die Schönheit der Leere, die Phänomene der Koexistenz und Resonanzen im Leben offenbart.

Pflanze (1947), a delicate pencil drawing by Joseph Beuys, is located on an elliptical sheet of paper that resembles a botanical seed. A figure that looks like the pistil of a flower, resembles a human figure holding a megaphone above its head. As if the plant is speaking or sending signals toward the sun. Her feet hold the ground, and two leaf skeletons are attached to either side of her leg, as if they were wings ready to fly. A delicately outlined circle in the background: is this the aura of the plant or the sun? The drawing represents all the characteristics of a plant in a seemingly simple way.

In 2021 I was invited to compose a piece for Beuys Radio, one of the projects of Beuys 2021 exhibition, which is taking place on the occasion of the centenary of Beuys. It was obvious for me to compose a piece inspired by plant. I called it Plant Music - imagine the music of a plant and also the planting of music.

In 2022, the piece was presented in the form of a four-channel sound installation at Manifesta 14 in Pristina, Kosovo. Unlike the installation at Manifesta 14, which was installed in a hotel room overlooking the city, the installation in Parliament of Plants II is in a public space. The plant music subtly blends with the sounds of the surrounding sounds of the environment, inviting visitors to listen contemplatively and discover the musical quality of the environment.

Pflanze (1947), eine zarte Bleistiftzeichnung von Joseph Beuys, befindet sich auf einem elliptischen Blatt Papier, das einem botanischen Samen ähnelt. Eine Figur, die wie der Stempel einer Blume aussieht, ähnelt einer menschlichen Figur, die ein Megaphon über ihren Kopf hält. Als ob die Pflanze sprechen oder Signale in Richtung Sonne senden würde. Ihre Füße halten den Boden fest, und zwei Blattskelette sind an beiden Seiten ihres Beins befestigt, als wären sie flugbereite Flügel. Ein zart umrissener Kreis im Hintergrund: Ist das die Aura der Pflanze oder die Sonne? Die Zeichnung stellt alle Merkmale einer Pflanze auf scheinbar einfache Weise dar. Im Jahr 2021 wurde ich eingeladen, ein Stück für Beuys Radio zu komponieren, eines der Projekte der Ausstellung Beuys 2021, die anlässlich des hundertsten Geburtstags von Beuys stattfindet. Es war für mich naheliegend, ein Stück zu komponieren, das von Pflanzen inspiriert ist. Ich habe es Plant Music genannt - stellen Sie sich die Musik einer Pflanze und auch das Pflanzen von Musik vor. Im Jahr 2022 wurde das Stück in Form einer vierkanaligen Klanginstallation auf der Manifesta 14 in Pristina, Kosovo, präsentiert. Im Gegensatz zu der Installation auf der Manifesta 14, die in einem Hotelzimmer mit Blick auf die Stadt installiert war, befindet sich die Installation in Parlament der Pflanzen II in einem öffentlichen Raum. Die Pflanzenmusik vermischt sich subtil mit den Geräuschen der Umgebung und lädt die Besucher ein, kontemplativ zuzuhören und die musikalische Qualität der Umgebung zu entdecken.

As part of the screening & conversation format »Beyond Labelwork« between Jacob Eriksen, Miki Yui, Nathalia Favaro & Selu Herraiz

The flux-project is an artistic collaboration by Nathalia Favaro and Miki Yui, which was created in 2019.

We organise an event combining the screening of the film FLUX with lecture, talk or workshop by local experts on issues related to ecology and sustainability. The event aims to offer inspiration and practical knowledge as well as examples of different approaches towards climate change.

Regarding climate change, deforestation, local communities, Amazon Rainforest, food production and consumption, the film is an open proposal to audience, inviting for further discussion. The sensitive and creative approach towards these issues makes the climate change tangible. It supports audience to feel, think and take action in their own way.

The goal is to raise awareness and bring people together to learn how to deal with our life on earth, to share ideas and encourage individuals to find their way to create a more sustainable society. The action of individuals lead in the sum to a greater result towards transformation of the global society. Such approach makes difference in the longer term, achieving long lasting commitment which is essential for the ecological issue.

This website is an ongoing archive of the events and collaborators, it serves as a sharing platform of useful knowledge and inspiration.

The film has been shown in different cities around the world to create a temporary learning space for  reflecting and acting on ecological life.

Das Flux-Projekt ist eine künstlerische Zusammenarbeit von Nathalia Favaro und Miki Yui, die 2019 ins Leben gerufen wurde. Wir organisieren eine Veranstaltung, bei der die Vorführung des Films FLUX mit einem Vortrag, einer Rede oder einem Workshop von lokalen Experten zu Themen der Ökologie und Nachhaltigkeit kombiniert wird. Ziel der Veranstaltung ist es, Inspiration und praktisches Wissen zu vermitteln und Beispiele für verschiedene Ansätze im Umgang mit dem Klimawandel zu zeigen. In Bezug auf Klimawandel, Abholzung, lokale Gemeinschaften, Amazonas-Regenwald, Lebensmittelproduktion und -konsum ist der Film ein offener Vorschlag an das Publikum, der zu weiteren Diskussionen einlädt. Der sensible und kreative Ansatz zu diesen Themen macht den Klimawandel greifbar. Er unterstützt die Zuschauer dabei, zu fühlen, zu denken und auf ihre eigene Weise zu handeln. Ziel ist es, das Bewusstsein zu schärfen und Menschen zusammenzubringen, um zu lernen, wie wir mit unserem Leben auf der Erde umgehen können, um Ideen auszutauschen und den Einzelnen zu ermutigen, seinen eigenen Weg zu einer nachhaltigeren Gesellschaft zu finden. Das Handeln des Einzelnen führt in der Summe zu einem größeren Ergebnis in Richtung Transformation der globalen Gesellschaft. Eine solche Herangehensweise macht langfristig einen Unterschied und führt zu einem dauerhaften Engagement, das für die ökologische Problematik unerlässlich ist. Diese Website ist ein fortlaufendes Archiv der Veranstaltungen und Mitwirkenden und dient als Plattform für den Austausch von nützlichem Wissen und Inspiration. Der Film wurde in verschiedenen Städten auf der ganzen Welt gezeigt, um einen temporären Lernraum zum Nachdenken und Handeln über ökologisches Leben zu schaffen.
