Lieven Martens alias Dolphins into the Future (°1981, Turnhout) lives and works in Antwerp. He creates conceptual music that floats between field recordings, ambient, musique concrète, and modern composition. 

»Field recordings are often more about listening than recording, and nobody listens like Lieven Martens. As Dolphins Into The Future, he blended new age, early synthesizer music and tropical field recordings making one-of-a-kind soundscapes during the noise boom of the mid-2000s. Er kreiert konzeptionelle Musik, die sich zwischen Field Recordings, Ambient, Musique Concrète und moderner Komposition bewegt. »Bei Field Recordings geht es oft mehr ums Zuhören als ums Aufnehmen, und niemand hört so gut zu wie Lieven Martens. Als Dolphins Into The Future mischte er während des Noise-Booms Mitte der 2000er Jahre New Age, frühe Synthesizer-Musik und tropische Feldaufnahmen zu einzigartigen Klanglandschaften. Jetzt, unter seinem eigenen Namen, ist seine Musik noch poetischer.« FACT

Thunder. Timpani. A conversation. A fight. A truck passing by. The streaming river. Construction works. Singing saw. The sound of late spring is the call of the swallows. 

Today’s and tomorrow's soundscapes deserves to be listened to, taken serious, and discussed. Not merely dismissed. Maybe we find “silence” after all? Or in this “silence” we find more loudness. If you notate every sound of the environment, are you also pencilling down your own heartbeat and breathing? What if you listen so close to one another that your breathing and heartbeats are louder than anything else?

This is - or better: ‘could be’ an interactive listening session. Bring your mind and maybe your favorite sound (a poem, a lighter, a book, tin foil, a CD, a rain coat, a rubber ball, an instrument, cell phone recordings of your commute and together we create an organic symphony, captured on the spot. Just by listening we are all part of a creative and organic research. We don’t have to do anything! So do you dare to not use your sound? 

No this is not a jam session. But an experiment where we look for new meaning outside music theory and field recordings. We leave the study (studied) room and go find joy in each other and in the surroundings. Or we find sadness. Or both. We can talk about it too. 

PS: for those sensitive to sound, we can provide noise cancelling headphones!

Mo(ve)mente und Erinnerungen, Zuhören und Kontakte IRL. Der Donner. Paukenschlag. Ein Gespräch. Ein Streit. Ein vorbeifahrender Lastwagen. Der strömende Fluss. Bauarbeiten. Singende Säge. Der Klang des späten Frühlings ist der Ruf der Schwalben. Die Klanglandschaften von heute und morgen verdienen es, dass man sie hört, ernst nimmt und diskutiert. Nicht einfach abgetan. Vielleicht finden wir ja doch "Stille"? Oder in dieser "Stille" finden wir mehr Lautstärke. Wenn man jedes Geräusch der Umgebung notiert, notiert man dann auch seinen eigenen Herzschlag und Atem? Was ist, wenn Sie so nah beieinander hören, dass Ihr Atem und Ihr Herzschlag lauter sind als alles andere? Dies ist - oder besser: 'könnte' eine interaktive Hörsitzung sein. Bringen Sie Ihren Geist und vielleicht Ihren Lieblingsklang mit (ein Gedicht, ein Feuerzeug, ein Buch, Stanniol, eine CD, einen Regenmantel, einen Gummiball, ein Instrument, Handyaufnahmen von Ihrem Arbeitsweg), und gemeinsam erschaffen wir eine organische Sinfonie, die an Ort und Stelle aufgenommen wird. Allein durch das Zuhören sind wir alle Teil einer kreativen und organischen Forschung. Wir müssen nichts tun! Trauen Sie sich also, Ihren Sound nicht zu benutzen? Nein, das ist keine Jamsession. Sondern ein Experiment, bei dem wir nach neuen Bedeutungen außerhalb von Musiktheorie und Field Recordings suchen. Wir verlassen den Studierraum und finden Freude aneinander und an der Umgebung. Oder wir finden Traurigkeit. Oder beides. Wir können auch darüber reden.PS: Für diejenigen, die empfindlich auf Geräusche reagieren, können wir geräuschunterdrückende Kopfhörer zur Verfügung stellen!
