Anna Schimkat enters the field of sound art with her sound installations and performances. Whether live or as an installation, she explores processes, causes, and regularities of natural, societal, and culturally created reality within their respective contexts. She asks how we experience things at all and how we can sharpen our awareness of the process of experiencing for ourselves as well as for the viewer. She is particularly interested in conscious perception of sound spaces, which she approaches with a multidisciplinary approach. The discovered sound of things and the environment serve as inspiration and foundation. Self-built instruments and field recordings of her main instrument, the world around us, serve as sound material.
Playfully, she explores and follows the respective concept, filtering out the specific sound and form, including ringing, buzzing, noise, clicking, growling, crashing, and humming.
In addition to works for public spaces, her works have been exhibited internationally, including at obPHON Sound Art Days (Kirschau, Germany), La Station Vastemonde (St. Brieuc, France), Goethe-Institut (Damascus, Syria), Kunstraum Michael Barthel (Leipzig, Germany), 24 Gauche Series (Montreal, Canada), ausland (Berlin, Germany), Longbridge Light Festival (Birmingham, United Kingdom), Festival for Experimental Music (Munich, Germany), Vadehavsfestival (Blavandshuk, Denmark), Inact Festival de Performances Transmedias (Strasbourg, France), BB15 (Linz, Austria), the church in Mutzschen (Mutzschen, Germany), Gallery for Contemporary Art (Leipzig, Germany), RE:FLUX 16 FESTIVAL (Moncton, Canada), Re Shape Festival (Miami Beach, USA).

The installation explores the experiences of Saxon immigrants in the United States during the early 20th century. Anna Schimkat, in collaboration with the fiddle player Izabela Kałduńska, explores the boundaries between electroacoustic experimental music and a sound art installation.
During the opening of the Seanaps Festival, the installation will be activated by two performers for a duration of three hours. The spatial composition integrates field and archival recordings, a shortwave radio, sounds shaped with threads and motors, and interpretations of immigration songs on the violin and scheitholt.
The focus lies on observing migration processes, how culture and traditions are preserved, transformed, and even exported.
Until World War II, the Erzgebirge were one of the world's most important locations for stocking and sock production. In the early 20th century, Saxon stocking craftsmen migrated to Pennsylvania and founded the „Vereinigung Erzgebirge" in 1931, the only East German association in the USA. After 1945, the Erzgebirge factories became part of a socialist stocking conglomerate, and stocking production in West Germany was established with machines imported from the USA and made by German emigrants. After the German reunification in 1990, most Saxon stocking factories fell silent, and textile production in Pennsylvania initially shifted to the south of the American continent and then to Asia.
The piece was created during a research residency at the International Studio and Curatorial Project (2022-23) in New York City, supported by the Kunstfonds Foundation and the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony.
